European white elm

Explanation

Elms can be recognized by their asymmetrical leaf base. On one side the leaf runs further along the stem than on the other side. The tree blooms in May with small clusters of reddish-brown flowers that flutter in the wind, hence the name fluttering elm. The flowers hang on stems, and that is how the tree gets its Dutch name, ‘steeliep’, or stem elm.
