Magnolia
Explanation
The Chinese magnolia (magnolia x soulangeana) is a real eye-catcher in spring. When all the trees are still bare, this shrubby magnolia really stands out with its large pink-and-white tulip-like flowers. The flowers appear early, before the leaves appear. For the rest of the year, it is dwarfed by its impressive neighbours. This magnolia is a cross of various Chinese species, but there are many other known species of magnolia, all of which are different in shape and colour.

Why we do what we do
The magnolia is very popular because of its beautiful flowers in spring. It is already in bloom when many other trees are still bare. Because of this exuberant bloom, it is often planted in gardens and parks. It is also used as a street tree.
This magnolia is probably one of the oldest flowering plants that we know.
