Cavity nesters

Explanation

A number of nesting boxes were placed around Tapijn for birds that nest in cavities. This way, we hope to be able to track how these birds build their nests, how they lay eggs, and how they raise their young. In nature – and in the city – these birds nest in cavities. This includes all kinds of cavities.
The great spotted woodpecker is a forest dweller and carves its nest into softer types of trees. It is also increasingly common in parks and gardens, which is why we have placed a nesting box for the great spotted woodpecker in the willow opposite the aviary.
